Bike marking sessions organised by Northumbria Police have proved popular with young cyclists in North Tyneside.

The London Borough of Brent has launched a BikeRegister scheme to prevent bicycle thefts in Willesden Green and assist with owner recovery.

Following a new link-up with Bike It, the national cycle-to-school initiative, children from primary schools in the Doncaster area have had their bikes security-marked and placed on the Bikeregister database to protect them from loss and theft.

Doctors, nurses and members of the public were encouraged to get on their bikes and ride to a teaching hospital near Norwich to attend a special bike ’surgery’ where cycles were security marked and registered on the national BikeRegister database.

Officers from Rotherham North Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) in South Yorkshire have been working hard to prevent the theft of BMX bikes and other pedal cycles in their area.

More than 1,200 bicycles are stolen every day in the UK, according to research by insurance firm Direct Line. The company left locked bikes in ten cities around the country and most were stolen within 24 hours - half disappeared within two hours.
