The New Log Book For Bikes

7 Jun 2006

In a bid to continue to reduce bicycle theft and help return recovered cycles to their rightful owners, an online initiative called bikeregister.com has been given a major ’face-lift’.

Featuring a newly-designed website that holds details of a bike and its owner on a secure database, bikeregister.com issues log books as part of the security system.

The log book works in the same way as a vehicle log book does – proving who the bike belongs to. If sold, the log book is passed on to the next owner, who then registers the ownership details in their name.

Bikeregister.com is owned and run by security firm Selectamark, which specialises in security marking and identification of property. Having marked more than 20 million items worldwide, Selectamark bought bikeregister.com in 2001, and combined this database with its own Bicycle Security Register formed in 1992.

Since then, the bikeregister.com database, which can be accessed by police forces nationwide, has become the most comprehensive bike register in the UK.

By registering, bike details are held on the database for the lifetime of the bike. Jason Brown, head of product development at Selectamark said: “With claims for bike theft rising by 27 per cent last year, it really makes sense to have bike owner’s details registered online incase they get stolen. Our new website will provide users with a site which is easy to navigate and simple to use.”

Bikeregister.com also provides protection for buyers and sellers of second hand bikes. Those considering purchasing a second hand bike can check a frame number with the database to confirm it hasn’t been reported stolen.

There is also the option of purchasing a Secured by Design ‘police preferred’ product for marking the frame of the bike. Bikeregister.com has close links with police forces across the UK, many of which have carried out bike marking days in areas of high crime. Major insurance companies are now insisting that all bikes worth over £1,000 are security marked.
