Insuring your bicycle is more important than ever according to Halifax General Insurance, which is claiming a rise in bicycle theft over the last year.

According to the insurer, claims for stolen bikes rose by more than a quarter (27 per cent) in 2004, and could be set to rise again with the forthcoming May Bank Holiday weekend.

Potentially good weather and free time could see more people take to the UK’s country lanes and bicycle paths this Bank Holiday, Halifax states, but cyclists should ensure their bikes are protected to ensure their bike ride is carefree.

Halifax advises cyclists to make sure that their home insurance policy includes their trusty two-wheeled steed.

“People often assume their home insurance policy will automatically cover all of their possessions and new additions to the home but people must reassess their insurance needs on a regular basis and inform their provider of new purchases,” comments Simon Stevens, CEO of Halifax General Insurance.

“This will help to make sure their cover is adequate, up to date and that they are protected should they fall victim to loss or theft.”

Figures released by Halifax suggest that the city of York was the worst for bike theft last year, followed by Doncaster, Edinburgh, Nottingham and south London.
