Met Police Cut The Cycle of Crime

25 Aug 2010

Over 30,000 bikes have been security marked using BikeRegister kits over the last five years in the London Boroughs of Richmond, Westminster, and Kingston alone.

Met Police have marked approximately 15,000 bikes in Richmond, 12,000 in Westminster and 7,000 in Kingston.

Kevin Fletcher-Biles, Community Safety Co-ordinator for Richmond, said: “We have 18 Safer Neighbourhood Teams running in the borough and they are constantly being asked to attend or organise bike marking events.

“Local schools ring up and request we come along, or we may decide to attend a local fair or the college Fresher’s Day. We also mark bikes belonging to commuters at railway stations such as Teddington, Barnes, and Mortlake.”

According to the latest figures from British Transport Police, bike thefts from railway stations in Richmond are down from 130 in 2008-9 to 85 in 2009-10, a drop of nearly 40%.
