Wheeling Out Cycle Crime In Warrington

20 Feb 2011

Cyclists in the Warrington South area of Cheshire are being offered the chance to have their bikes security marked and details logged on bikeregister.com, the UK’s leading online bike registration initiative.

Over the past few months there have been a number of bike thefts in the Warrington South area with cycles stolen from outside shops and other buildings. The suburban district of Latchford is a current hotspot area for this type of crime.

PCSO James Butterworth, of Warrington South Neighbourhood Policing Unit, has been hosting a series of community bike marking events using the bikeregister system including one at a community centre in Latchford, where local officers were on hand to security mark bikes belonging to members of the public.

BikeRegister uses a permanent and visible chemical solution containing microdots that is applied to the bike frame to form a unique personal code. A security sticker is then stuck on each bike to show that it is security marked. The details of the owner of each bike along with their address and postcode are then registered on a secure on-line database.

PCSO Butterworth said: “We do recover many bikes, which we suspect are stolen, but we are often unable to trace the owners as there are no security markings on them. This makes it very difficult for us to trace who the bike belongs to as there is very little to go on.

“Warrington South NPU is committed to tackling this type of crime. As part of that commitment we are offering local people the opportunity to come along and have their bike security marked. It acts as a deterrent to would-be thieves and is also a good way of identifying a bike if it is ever stolen and later recovered.”

PCSO Butterworth added: “We are urging anyone who owns a bike to take on board the crime reduction advice and to do everything they can to ensure their prized possession is kept safe and secure.
