Bikeregister Supports ‘The Big Pedal’ With Special Offer

16 Mar 2011

An exciting initiative to encourage pupils to saddle up and pedal their way to the title of “the UK’s fastest school” is about to get off the blocks, together with a special offer from online bike registration initiative Bikeregister.com.

The Big Pedal (7-25 March) is a stage race, similar to the Tour de France, but spanning 15 school days and involving hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of cycling pupils. The race is being organised by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub. The Big Pedal is open to any school in the UK and it is free to take part.

Gearing up to support The Big Pedal is BikeRegister (http://www.bikeregister.com), the UK’s leading online registration initiative to reduce bike theft and aid owner recovery.

During the three weeks of the challenge, Bikeregister will be offering any participating UK school a special half-price offer on their Bikeregister marking and registration kits (silver option) to help protect pupils\’ bikes from theft. Minimum order is for 50 kits at £6.23 each plus VAT. Each order should be accompanied by an official school PO number.

The Big Pedal gets underway in London on 7th March, with each day after that bringing different time trials and stages beginning in one town and ending in another. The more pupils cycling each day, the quicker the time awarded to the school and the one with the lowest overall time will be the winner.

Pupils with extra pedal power will be tackling strenuous uphill rides in the Scottish Highlands, others will shift gear and speed to Exmouth, while school children in Northern Ireland will be racing around the region in a series of long, flat sprints.

Schools can also run competitions between their individual classes, and will be able to check which class has generated most daily journeys by logging on to their school home page.

First prize will be a day out with the M.A.D cycle stunt team and runners up will win a bike and scooter storage system worth more than £1,000.

Schools can take part in the entire three-week challenge or just the one-day stage in the last week - Bike to School Week (March 21-25).

About BikeRegister
Bikeregister is owned and maintained by security company Selectamark and aims to reduce bicycle theft and assist in owner recovery. Bikes are permanently and visibly marked with a unique ID code to prove ownership and placed on the secure database (http://www.bikeregister.com) for the lifetime of the bike. If a bike is stolen and then recovered, police can check the marking and log onto the database to quickly verify the true owner and reunite them with their bike. As part of the scheme, each bike owner is issued with a personal logbook as proof of ownership.
