Bike Recoveries

Found the bike being sold on Facebook marketplace. Set up a time and place to meet and posed as a buyer. Contacted 101 for help 30 minutes beforehand. British Transport Police showed up as I was inspecting the bike. Managed to identify the bike as mine with pictures of the bike and the frame number.

My partner found the bike locked with a new lock further down our street 4 days after it was stolen. Police attended and removed lock with an angle grinder borrowed from nearby builders.

A local citizen found the bike abandoned and a bit bashed up. Contacted Bike Register--was ignored for about a week (Not a good turn around time for the Bike Register!). He called after a week and then I (the owner) was contacted by Bike Register with a number for the person who found the bike. Happy to be reunited with it!

I had two trackers on the bike but the thief only removed one, so I was able to locate it. I called the police once I found it and they gave it back to me.

I found the bike advertised on Facebook Marketplace and recovered it from the seller with the help of officers from Colindale Police Station. The police were only prepared to help because the bike register sticker was visible on the seller's photos, allowing a 99% positive identification. I then had to go to meet the seller and make a positive identification, with the police waiting round the corner, before they were able to intervene. Also, in the run-up to the recovery, the police took an awful lot of persuading that this was worth their time. And the whole process took quite a lot of time: researching the whereabouts of the bike, waiting on hold to speak to police, giving statements, collecting bikes etc. etc. All in all, it was a huge amount of work to recover a bike I could otherwise simply have claimed for on insurance. That said, the seller had a good number of other stolen bikes that the police later recovered in a raid and can now be reunited with their owners. So, in conclusion: it's a hassle and quite stressful, but if you have the time to recover bikes in this way it can be very satisfying!
