Tough Protection For BMX Bikes

21 Apr 2010

Officers from Rotherham North Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) in South Yorkshire have been working hard to prevent the theft of BMX bikes and other pedal cycles in their area.

Initially, they organised marking events aimed at young people who frequent the local BMX track, but the project is also being taken into local schools and offered at other surrounding venues.

PC Paul Gray said: “This project will help us to combat the theft of push bikes within the SNT, many of which go unreported. The police recover lots of bikes many of which we cannot find the owners of and are subsequently auctioned off at substantially lower values.

“We aim through this scheme to prevent the crimes happening in the first place, to lower the fear of crime and reassure people that we can get the property to the rightful owner should it be recovered.”
