Sutton Officers Run Summer Bike Marking Initiative
17 Jul 2012
More than 100 cyclists in the London Borough of Sutton have had their bicycles security marked and registered on BikeRegister during a two-week initiative run by Sutton’s Safer Transport Team.
Officers joined forces with bike shops to hold bike security marking and registration events during June including one at Pearson Cycles, High Street, Sutton.
Officers who specialise in cycle security were on hand to mark and register people’s bikes and provide advice on how cyclists can lock up their bikes securely to deter cycle theft.
The bikes were registered on the Metropolitan Police Service preferred cycle registration database -http://www.BikeRegister.com The p.rocess takes just a few minutes. Registering details of a bike helps police and retailers identify and verify the legitimate owner of cycles that have been stolen or are being resold.
Sgt Bryan Gibson, of Sutton’s Safer Transport Team said: “In addition to bicycle marking, we are continuing to use a range of tactics such as high visibility patrols and surveillance to combat cycle theft. We are determined to bring offenders to justice to ensure that cyclists continue to get on their bikes this summer.”
