Personal Robbery Reduced by 63% in Merseyside

Officers from across various police forces took place in 'Operation Calibre' from the 6th - 12th November, in order to tackle robbery and serious violence. This operation saw a 63% reduction in personal robbery offences in comparison to 2022, by targeting robbery 'hotspot' locations with high visibility patrols.

Operation Calibre concentrates on prevention, education, engagement and enforcement in order to tackle crime. To achieve these objectives, Operation Calibre partnered with BikeRegister to help combat cycle crime within Merseyside.

During this week of action, over 200 officers were trained on E-bike legislation and how to effectively use the BikeRegister app, to facilitate in the recovery of bikes. This implementation has resulted in multiple high-value bikes being returned to their owners.

Alongside this, Merseyside Police has launched crime prevention bike marking events in the Wirral. This project has led to 438 bikes being registered since July 2023 and an extension of this project is due to go ahead in other areas of Merseyside.

Inspector Lauren Leach, Deputy Lead for Serious Violence and Knife Crime, said: “Thanks to the hard work of officers during this week of action, we have seen a 63% reduction in personal robbery offences compared to the same period last year. This is significant as it means less victims of robbery, which can be a frightening experience.

“We continue to undertake preventative work with partners and local businesses to deliver long-lasting change, including the BikeRegister partnership which is seeing some great results in Wirral."
