Making Bike Thieves Take A Back Seat

1 Mar 2012

Cyclists in Stockport were urged to saddle up and beat the bike thieves by taking advantage of a new bike security scheme using BikeRegister.

Officers from the Stockport West Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) marked bikes in Rostherne Road in Adswood and on Dorset Avenue in Bramhall.

Once painted on the security mark cannot be easily removed, deterring criminals as the mark can be used to identify the rightful owner of bikes if the bikes are stolen. The security marks can also help to convict cycle thieves.

Sergeant Greg Morgan from the Stockport West NPT said: “This is a great opportunity to help put the brakes on bike theft by getting bikes security marked, for people to meet their local officers and take away essential crime prevention advice.”
He added: “Thieves target bikes as they are expensive, so it is important that people use a good quality lock and lock their bikes to something fixed or bulky, even when in the shed or garage.”
