Officers from Southwark Counter Terrorism Patrol Unit (CTPU) recently held a bike theft and safety awareness day in partnership with the British Red Cross and local council wardens.

The event took place at the offices of the Financial Times (FT) newspaper in Park Street, London, SE1, and involved marking bikes belonging to staff members and demonstrations of life saving and first aid techniques by The Red Cross.

Southwark CTPU talked to FT staff about their latest crime prevention campaigns and used the BikeRegister bike marking system to protect staff bikes.

PCSO Simon Johnson said: “We were pleased to target harden commuter bikes at the FT against cycle thieves. The bikes registered had a retail value of £7,400 and included 2 carbon fibre road racing bikes which we marked using BikeRegister’s TESA marking kits.”

If a bike is marked and registered on BikeRegister it can be traced back to the owner if it is stolen and later recovered by police.

Dominic Woodley FT Security Manager said: “FT staff enjoyed having their personal safety and first aid questions answered and our bike owners were over the moon at having their bikes marked and registered.”

PCSO Ray Bacchus added: “The support of our partners helped make the day a great success. The FT has invited us all back in the summer for another event.”
