BikeRegister Puts Spoke In The Wheel For Bike Thieves

25 Jan 2011

Following a spate of bike thefts from the city centre last summer, police in Peterborough are launching an initiative to encourage bike owners to protect their cycles from theft using the national BikeRegister database.

Funded by Cambridgeshire Constabulary in a joint venture with a number of city centre businesses supporting crime prevention initiatives, the campaign is being launched this week (Wednesday, 26th July) with a free bike marking event in Cathedral Square from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.

Local residents, shoppers, office workers, students and children can all come along and have their bike marked free of charge by community safety officers and local neighbourhood policing team members.

Other bike marking events are planned for Thursday, 3rd February from 3pm-6pm, and Friday, 18th February from 8am-10am, also in Cathedral Square.

Bikeregister is owned and maintained by security company Selectamark and aims to reduce bicycle theft and assist in owner recovery. Bikes are permanently and visibly marked with a unique ID code to prove ownership and placed on the secure database (http://www.bikeregister.com) for the lifetime of the bike.

If a bike is stolen and then recovered, police can check the marking and log onto the database to quickly verify the true owner and reunite them with their bike. As part of the scheme, each bike owner is issued with a personal logbook as proof of ownership.

Leading the initiative is Tracy Holyoake, Crime Reduction Officer for the Safer Peterborough Team.
Tracy said: “By introducing a bikeregister scheme in the city centre we hope to stay ahead of the game and stop bike theft happening. The bike marking kits are so simple to use, it literally takes 30 seconds to do the marking.”

She continued: “Lots of people, especially children, had new bikes for Christmas and we are keen to help them avoid becoming victims of cycle theft. However, if a bike is stolen and then recovered by police, it is extremely likely that through the bikeregister system it can be quickly reunited with its owner.”
