In 2020, Cambridge City Community Safety Partnership initiated a multi-agency task group, chaired by Cambridge City Council, to combat cycle crime and anti-social behaviour. As a result, there has been a 60% reduction in cycle thefts from 2019 to 2022 and Cambridge is no longer in the top 5 cities for cycle theft.
The group believe that Enforcement, Infrastructure, and Education are key to successfully cutting crime and this framework has yielded fantastic results:

Enforcement: Cambridgeshire Constabulary have been hosting cycle marking events in association with BikeRegister. Between April 2022 and March 2023, Cambridgeshire City Police have successfully registered 2,210 cycles on the BikeRegister database! They have also been prioritizing offenders by utilizing Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) to increase the risk associated with bike theft.

Infrastructure: The task group has jointly invested in 16 new CCTV cameras in key locations covering 650 cycle parking spaces aiding in 26 arrests and 200 reviewed incidents, enhancing safety for residents, visitors, and businesses. Further development of this project is proposed for 2024.

Education: The ‘Save Our Cycles’ campaign by Camcycle (Cambridge Cycling Campaign) , offers three simple steps: ‘Love it; Lock it; List it’. This campaign has successfully raised awareness of cycle security and has distributed 20,000 leaflets at local events.
