Residents of North Yorkshire who received a new bike over Christmas and the New Year period are being urged to have it security marked at special bike surgeries offered by local police.

The officers will be using BikeRegister security marking which not only deters bike theft but also helps police to locate the owner of a bike if it is recovered after being stolen by thieves.

The Bike Marking Surgeries will be taking place in Mobile Police Offices and are being organised by North Yorkshire Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams and financed by Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership.

The officers have been supplied with 500 kits to use at the bike surgeries, where they will mark any bikes brought along with a unique code and enter the details of the owner on a secure online database which police forces across the UK have secure access to.

Inspector Neil Northend, North Yorkshire Police, said: “People spend a lot of money on buying a bike and many parents will have made that investment this Christmas.”

He continued: “Bikes are easy targets for thieves, especially if they are not securely stored or left unlocked even for a short time. Our bike surgeries will give local residents the chance to get their new bike marked and registered on the national database.

“Security marking offers peace of mind that if your bike is stolen and we recover it as part of our operations, we will be able to hand it back to you.”

Easingwold Market Place: Saturday January 26 - Mobile Police Office, 10am – 1.30pm
Thirsk Market Place: Sunday January 27 - Mobile Police Office, 10am - 1.30pm
Great Ayton Discovery Centre: Saturday February 2, 10am – 2pm
Scotton Village Hall: Saturday February 2, 10am – 2pm
Stokesley Town Hall: Saturday February 9, 10am – 2pm
