Lone Cyclist Identified Thanks To BikeRegister Marking

BikeRegister doesn’t just help identify bikes...

A MAN from Stratford on Avon was involved in a collision with another vehicle whilst riding his bike during a cold January morning.

Riding alone and not carrying any ID, police and ambulance crew were unable to find out the identity of the cyclist, making it impossible to inform family members of his condition.

Luckily, the cyclist had attended one of the many BikeRegister bike marking events held by Warwickshire Police where he had his bike marked using a QR code. Each QR code has a unique number which relates to the person registering the cycle.

The cycle and the owner’s details are then put on the BikeRegister database,
which police can access 24/7 and if the bike is ever stolen and/or recovered it
can be traced back to them.

In this case, BikeRegister was used to obtain the details of the man who had been involved in the collision so that police were able to carry out checks and inform his family.

BikeRegister is the UK's national cycle database and the leading online bicycle identification and registration initiative aiming to reduce cycle theft, identify stolen bikes and assist in owner recovery. BikeRegister is used by every UK Police Force and is the preferred bike marking system of the Metropolitan Police Service. There are more than 460,000 bikes already
registered on the database.
