Officers in Wales have marked and registered new police bikes with BikeRegister to protect them from being stolen while they are on duty.

The bikes are being used by PCSOs patrolling The Taff Trail, a 55-mile, multi-purpose route for cyclists and walkers which runs through both urban and countryside locations, starting at Cardiff Bay in the south and stretching to the market town of Brecon in the north.

The high spec bikes are fitted with specialist police equipment and used by officers who cycle along the trail to guard against crime and anti-social behaviour, particularly in the built-up areas.

Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council is funding the new police bike scheme.

Ray Edwards at the Council said: “These new police bikes are worth over £500 each and we are keen to protect them from theft while officers are on duty. The bikes have been visibly marked and registered with a special code that links them back to us. The code is stored on the secure BikeRegister database.”

He continued: “In the event that one of the bikes is stolen, the marking is impossible to remove, making the bike extremely difficult to sell on. We are confident that bike marking is a strong deterrent to stop bike thieves and it will also give the officers added peace of mind as they go out on patrol.”
