Rail Operators Cut Cycle Theft by 53% with BikeRegister Marking Events
26 Jun 2026
Rail Enforcement Officers from Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern are delivering measurable reductions in cycle theft across the network using BikeRegister to mark bikes, deter thieves and boost the recovery of stolen bicycles.
22 Bike Marking Events and Counting
Working alongside the British Transport Police (BTP) through the Cycle Surgery scheme, officers have run 22 free bike marking events across the network. At each event, cyclists receive a unique BikeRegister ID for their bike, practical guidance on registering their bicycle and how to correctly use certified locks.
To date, 218 bikes have been marked, each one now traceable through the BikeRegister database if reported stolen.
Significant Reductions in Cycle Offences
Since the scheme launched, pedal cycle offences have fallen at multiple stations:
- Hassocks: -53.3%
- Eastbourne: -41.2%
- Chichester: -33.3%
Officers are now using monthly cycle theft reports to identify where future Cycle Surgery events will have the greatest impact - a data-led approach that allows resources to be directed where they are needed most.
What Happens at a Cycle Surgery?
Each event is free to attend. Rail Enforcement Officers and BTP officers mark cyclists' bikes with a unique BikeRegister ID and register their bike on BikeRegister’s National Cycle Database. Cyclists also receive advice on choosing and fitting Sold Secure-approved locks to reduce the risk of theft.
Registered bikes are significantly easier to reunite with their owners if recovered by police following theft.
