Cyclists in Widnes have been offered the chance to have their bikes security marked and the details logged on the BikeRegister database.

PCSO Paul Mines hosted the bike marking event at Victoria Park, Widnes, and cyclists were invited to bring their bikes along and have them permanently security marked with a unique identification code.

The details of the bike were then registered on national cycle database BikeRegister.com and the code can help police trace the owner if the bicycle is ever stolen.

PCSO Mines, of Widnes neighbourhood policing unit, said: “Many people will have received new bikes for Christmas and we would recommend that they have them security marked. There will also be many other people who will have had a bike for years and have never considered having it marked.”

He continued: “Bike marking acts as a deterrent to would-be thieves and is also a good way of identifying a bike if it is ever stolen and later recovered. We do recover many bikes which we suspect are stolen, but we are often unable to trace the owners as there are no security markings on them.”
