BikeRegister Scheme Teaches Children About Security
7 Jul 2009Pupils at a primary school in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, are now cycling safer thanks to a visit by their neighbourhood police team.
Youngsters from Eastgate Primary School had their bikes security marked by officers and placed on the national Bikeregister scheme (http://www.bikeregister.com), as part of an on-going campaign by local police to raise awareness of cycle security and deter bike theft in the Kings Lynn area.
The Bikeregister marking kits from Selectamark permanently mark the frame of the cycle with a unique code which is recorded on a national register. Visible stickers deter potential thieves but, should the bike be stolen and then recovered, police are quickly able to identify the rightful owner.
Lynn North Police Community Support Officer Diane Rayfield said: “We were able to conduct the visit with the help and support of the school, which runs cycling proficiency schemes twice a year for the children. Our school visits help promote cycle security awareness and ensure children are clued up on how to stay safe when out and about.”
PCSO Rayfield added: “Children know the colour of their bikes but not usually the make and model. By having their bikes registered on Bikeregister.com they are being given a good lesson in taking responsibility for their own property.
“There is a big problem with bike theft from Kings Lynn town centre, mainly because people neglect to secure them properly. We are trying to get the message across to young people that they need to look after their property and caring for their bike is a good place to start.”
