BikeRegister and New York Bike Expert Promote Security

20 Oct 2011
With Christmas approaching, Avon & Somerset police are issuing a timely reminder to cyclists to lock their bikes up securely when they are out and about, and also to mark and register them online using

Local police teams in Taunton have been running cycle marking schemes in association with BikeRegister, where each bike is permanently marked with a unique identification code that helps police to trace the owner if the bike is ever lost or stolen.

Sergeant Tony Crowter from the Taunton Town Centre team said: “Unfortunately we are experiencing the theft of bicycles around Taunton and sadly some of these crimes are due to bikes being left insecure.”

As well as bike marking, officers have been hitting the streets with renowned US bike expert Hal Ruzal from award-winning New York bike store Bicycle Habitat.

Hal has been helping police grade the efficiency of cyclists’ bike locks and has been on-hand to offer general bike security advice to the public.

Sgt Crowter advised: “You should invest in a heavy duty lock, the best you can afford that is a suitable style for your bike. Make sure it reflects the value of your bicycle. £40/£50 or approximately 20% of the value of your bike is a good guide.”

Police have been warning cyclists in Taunton to take extra care when buying a new bike to check where it has come from.

Verification is made easier by using, as anyone buying a second hand bike can enter the frame number or bike marking number into the database to see if it is flagged up as stolen.

Sgt Crowter said: “Don’t create a market for thieves by buying a stolen bike, make sure the seller owns it. When buying a new bike, purchase from a recognised dealer. Buying stolen goods can have repercussions for the buyer as well as the seller!”

He also warned thieves that uniformed and undercover officers regularly conduct “sting” operations to combat bike theft. “To those who engage in this type of crime think carefully, we could be watching you,” he said.
