Hackney Safer Transport Reduces Bike Theft By 45%

16 Oct 2012

Officers from Hackney’s Safer Transport Team (STT) reduced bike theft in the area by 45% after a concerted drive to lower the crime in the first week of October 2012.

Offering cycle security marking and advice to the public about registering their bikes on BikeRegister, the officers delivered 50 hours of crime prevention advice in Broadway Market, E8 from Monday 1st-Sunday 7th October.
Security marking a bike and registering it on BikeRegister can deter potential thieves, as a marked bike can easily be identified if it is stolen and then recovered.

As part of the initiative, over 400 bikes were security marked at Broadway Market and more than 100 crime prevention stickers were placed on bike racks in known crime hotspots in Hackney.

PC Lee Thomas, from Hackney’s Safer Transport team, said: “This initiative has so far proven to be a success. Comparative figures for the same week last year (2011), show a 45% reduction in reported cycle thefts in Hackney.”

He added: “STT officers will continue to conduct their patrols around London Fields, Broadway Market and along Regents Canal. These patrols aim to increase confidence and provide reassurance to the public, as well as deter any potential bike thieves.”
