Officers from MPS Hackney recently gave residents and visitors to the East London Borough the opportunity to have their bikes security marked using BikeRegister.

PCSOs from Haggerston Safer Neighbourhood Team were stationed on the popular Regent’s Canal path at the junction with Dunston Road, E8, from 8am on August 9th.

PCSO Toby Proctor, from Haggerston SNT, said: “This was a perfect time of day to meet the many cyclists that travel up and down the canal path. Over 25 bikes were registered today.”

The marking process is quick and simple to apply and involves a unique Bikeregister ID being permanently marked on the bike frame. The marking compound is blue which is not immediately visible on a dark coloured frame, but would be seen under a police UV light due to the presence of a UV tracer in the compound.

Officers then register the details of the bike on the national Bikeregister database which the police can access 24/7 to identify the bicycle’s owner, should it be stolen and recovered.

PCSO Proctor continued: “I hope that with these marking events we are increasing public awareness about simple bike security and making opportunistic thieves think twice about stealing a bike.”
