500 Bikes Marked In Bromley Borough

14 Jul 2011

Police officers from the Safer Transport Team for Bromley have been using BikeRegister as part of an ongoing campaign against bike theft in the borough.

Recent figures reveal that more than 200 bikes have been stolen across Bromley borough so far this year, worth a total value of £52,000.

Of those stolen, only six owners have been able to supply the cycle frame number to police and around a quarter were unable to give the make or type of cycle.

PC Lee Rickwood, who is one of the team responsible for marking bikes at a series of recent community events said: “BikeRegister is ideal for marking all types of bikes and is really helping us to get a grip on bike theft in the borough.

“We often recover bikes - some of which are very expensive models - but because they aren’t marked we have no way of knowing who they belong to.”

The BikeRegister marking is simple and quick to apply. Details of the owner are placed on the national BikeRegister database (http://www.bikeregister.com) and a logbook can be downloaded as proof of ownership.

The Bromley officers, led by Sgt Steve Hann, have marked more than 500 bikes in recent months and have organised marking sessions at the Bromley Festival, local schools, Orpington Police Station, a bike shop in Penge, and at a Rotary Club cycling event in Norman Park.

Sgt Hann said: “Our bike theft initiative is ongoing. We will continue to attend community events in the area and offer security marking to cyclists who want to protect their bikes. We are determined to drive bike theft down and reduce the number of recovered bikes stuck in police storage. BikeRegister is giving us the means to achieve this aim.”
